J-1 Scholar Visa

“Please be aware of the recommended 3 month lead time for new J-1 visa applications.  Except in extraordinary circumstances, the AST team will not prioritize requests for new visas received less than 3 months ahead of the Exchange Visitor's start date.  (Requests for renewals should be submitted with at least 1 month lead time.)”

H-1B Visa

Except in extraordinary circumstances, the AST team will not prioritize requests for new H-1B applications that arrive less than 9 months ahead of the new employee's start date (6 months for H-1B renewals).

Will your unit sponsor a permanent residency ("Green Card") application for this employee?
Permanent Residency ('Green Card') applications are the responsibility of departments/units. The Green Card application process should begin as soon as possible after the tenure-track position has been proffered. Failure to act within a reasonable period of time may jeopardize the employee's ability to obtain permanent residency and continue uninterrupted employment. Please refer to AHR for deadlines and procedures (https://ap.washington.edu/iso/pr.html#application_process).

Other Visa Type

Initiate Permanent Residency Application

Applications for permanent residency should be initiated as soon as possible after the completion of the initial hire letter. Failure to begin the application process within 18 months of that iinitial letter's date will require the department/school to repeat the entire posting and hiring process. Note: This form initiates a multi-step, iterative application process. An AST team member will work closely with the department and the International Scholars Operation team to help shepherd the application.
